چکیده

My approach is to undertake a series of well replicated experiments on a broad range of zooplanktonic taxa, including copepods, larval fish, larval euphausiids, and ciliates. Our experimental apparatus consists of a series of six columnar tanks equipped with infra-red video cameras that continuously scan the full vertical range (210 cm) of each tank and thereby determine the vertical distribution of organisms over a several day period (Fig. 1). Each custom Plexiglas tank is fitted with eight sets of valves (one input and one outflow) spaced at intervals to allow for adding or withdrawing water samples for manipulation or analysis (e.g., nutrients, chlorophyll or ciliates). A natural light simulation system is comprised of a light source and a dusk/dawn simulation wheel made of increasing layers of neutral density blocking gel. The light source for filming is an infrared light-emitting diode (IR-LED). A video camera fitted with a macro/zoom lens is mounted in front of the tank. Zooplankters are seen as silhouettes and recorded on a VCR with a date/time recorder. This entire

Edge gradients provide evidence of ecological interactions in planktonic thin layers

Physical, optical, and acoustical data from Monterey Bay, California, USA, describing the distributions of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and small fish as well as gradients in the physical habitat were used to examine the interactions between vertically compressed plankton structures (thin layers), their consumers, and the local physical forces they experience. The relationship between upper and ...

Integrated measurements of acoustical and optical thin layers I: Vertical scales of association

This study combined measurements from multiple platforms with acoustic instruments on moorings and on a ship and optics on a profiler and an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to examine the relationships between fluorescent, bioluminescent, and acoustically scattering layers in Monterey Bay during nighttime hours in July and August of 2006 and May of 2008. We identified thin bioluminescent la...

Dynamic 3-dimensional structure of thin zooplankton layers is impacted by foraging fish

The potential attraction of fish to thin layers of zooplankton and the role of predation by fish in the formation and persistence of these layers were assessed using 3-dimensional sonar observations. Zooplankton were found in intense layers with vertical scales of 0.2 to 4.6 m with a mode of 2.2 m. These thin zooplankton layers had complex 3-dimensional structure with significant, though gradua...

1 Plankton Patch Feasibility Experiments

Efforts this year focused on testing our model of the effects of episodic increases in current shear on the dynamics and impacts of thin layers of phytoplankton and zooplankton. Thin layers are plankton patches that range in thickness from a few tens of centimeters to a few meters, yet can be sufficiently intense to affect biological rate processes and the performance of current and planned Nav...

Grazing Impacts of Diverse Zooplankton Taxa on Thin Layers

The US Navy needs to know how distributions and abundances of light-scattering and sound-scattering organisms in the ocean vary in space and time, particularly in the vertical dimension. Recent field observations have shown that many biological properties may vary substantially over small (e.g. centimeter) scales, commonly referred to as “thin layers” (e.g. Cowles et al. 1998, 1999, Hanson & Do...
